A reverse glass painting on the existing windows in the interior of the hall is planned for the upcoming exhibition “Fight or Flight”. This new, site-specific work ties in with the “come closer” series that began in 2019.
It depicts a red and white barrier tape that winds its way around the architectural corner.
The barrier tape, which is omnipresent in Berlin's cityscape as a sign of “attention”, “warning” or “forensics”, is reinterpreted here and used as an artistic element. The painting can be understood as a delicate touch, a fleeting movement or a warning hint. During a two-week residency in 2022 at the Structura Gallery in Sofia, I was able to realize the installation “Geschlossene Gesellschaft (closed society)”. Here, the barrier tape symbolized art as a protective space - a space that creates encounters, enables dialogues, stimulates the imagination - and which must be preserved.
In the installation for Fight or Flight, the barrier tape is not only understood as an aesthetic element, but should also be read as a symbolic gesture that can be both a protective space and an obstacle. The painting attempts to challenge viewers to question the boundaries between safety and danger, closeness and distance, to sharpen their own
communication skills and to reflect on patterns of action.

About
Jane Garbert, born in Berlin 1988, studied fine arts at UdK. A supporting element in her art is not only poetry, but also a presence of factual circumstances. Everyday ornamentation is a big theme in her work. She captures the detection and observation of seemingly banal processes, such as in renovation situations, in urban space, or in hidden work processes, photographically and cinematically, in order to subsequently detach them from their original location and uncover new narratives. The search for a material equivalent also plays a role, and the choice of materials varies depending on the occasion. A kind of equation of everyday events with artistic processes runs as a theme through her creative work and animates her to explore their transformative capacity ever anew - through painterly and sculptural approaches.
